The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Perry Calderwood, on Wednesday said no fewer than 9,000 Nigerians were currently studying in various Canadian universities.
This was contained in a press statement issued by Olagoke Oke, the Deputy Registrar of Information, University of Lagos, in Lagos.
It said there was the need for further collaborations between both countries in the area of academics to create better understanding that would promote cultural, economic and other ties.
Calderwood said: “We have over 9,000 Nigerian students currently studying in Canada and I want to say this is a good trend.
“This is my second visit to this university and I am delighted to be here again.
“I hope that this visit will further lead to exploring partnership with the university also in the area of entrepreneurship, students and scholars’ exchange programme and capacity building.”
The statement added that the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, said Nigeria had lots of good institutions operating in academic friendly environment.
It said that Bello drew the attention of the High Commissioner to the University’s Foundation programmes, with over six partner-universities worldwide.
According to the statement, the university is also prepared for an exploration of partnership agreement with Canadian universities through him.
