England are hoping Arsenal youngster Alex Iwobi rejects Nigeria and opts to represent the Three Lions going forward, according to The Mirror.
The 19-year-old, who scored on his full Premier League debut against Everton on Saturday, represented England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 levels before accepting a call-up from Nigeria.
Iwobi, who was born in Nigeria and is the nephew of Jay-Jay Okocha, has played in two friendly games for the Super Eagles, meaning his international future remains undecided until he makes his competitive bow.
However, with Iwobi being named by Daniel Amokachi in Nigeria’s latest squad for the Africa Cup of Nations double-header against Egypt, England must make their move before the first leg on Friday.
Arsene Wenger is keen for Iwobi to answer the Football Association’s call but there is no guarantee of a senior call-up in the foreseeable, even if the youngster does pledge his future to the Three Lions.
