The war against unemployment in Ekiti State is gradually being won as the state government at the weekend stated that it has engaged no fewer than 17,000 unemployed youths since 2011.
Speaking at the inauguration of the second batch of 5,000 youth volunteers into the Ekiti Project Volunteer programme, the state Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, said his administration has been able to deliver on its promise to engage 20,000 youths by 2014.
Fayemi added that the Skills acquisition Scheme has absorbed a considerable number of the youths, the agricultural and tourism sectors, State Traffic Management Agency, fire fighting unit and paramedics as well as the Peace Corps among others have engaged the service of the youths.
While charging the youths to make the best out of the scheme, the governor assured them that their training at the Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps in Ise-Orun-Emure Ekiti has been packaged to capsulate self-management, entrepreneurial and leadership trainings.
Meanwhile, Fayemi has commissioned four more roads within Ado Ekiti, the state capital.
The roads are the rehabilitated Ijigbo-Baptist College Road, Aladesanmi Crescent Road, Egbewa-NTA Road and Omisanjana-Falegan Road.
Commissioning the roads, the governor said the vision of his administration is to transform roads across the state as a way of making the state more investors-friendly.
He added that government is pursuing this goal with all earnestness even in the face of dwindling resources to keep to the terms of the administration’s social contract with the people.
Fayemi urged the people to partner with the state government in the maintenance of the roads by not burning tyres on them, dumping refuse in the drains or indiscriminately cutting the roads.
Earlier, the Director-General of the State Job Creation and Employment Agency, Funso Aluko, had explained that 9,000 youths were interviewed but 2,500 who met all the requirements of the Agency were selected as the first group to undergo the current training while the second batch of 2,500 would start training on October 28.
Aluko added that the seven-day training would help prepare the youths so that they could fit in to deliver the social contract of transforming the state.
