The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Chief Patrick Ekeji, on Tuesday formally stepped down from the plum job, having completed his four-year contract term.
Mr Mustapha Mohammed, the Director of Administration and Finance and most senior in the Commission takes over from him in acting capacity, Mr Ekeji, retired from the federal civil service in 2009. He was a victim of the new policy that made it mandatory for those who had served as director for ten years to retire.
However, then Sports Minister, Sani Ndanusa, assisted him to secure a contract through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Interestingly, the actual tenure of Chief Ekeji’ s contract has been a subject of controversy since then.
It was gathered that those jostling for his seat actually leaked the secret to the Presidency that he had a four-year contract and not five-year as being claimed. Ekeji took over from the erstwhile Director General, Dr Amos Adamu.
