The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said on Thursday that it had arrested a candidate of the Social Democratic Party for alleged N142 million scam.
This was contained in a statement signed by the commission’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Thursday.
The spokesman did not, however, disclose the name of the female candidate who is vying for a House of Representatives seat in the March 28 polls.
Uwujaren said the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded.
Uwujaren alleged that the 37-year-old suspect obtained building materials worth N142 million from one businessman, Alhaji Isa Bello, by false pretence.
According to him, the suspect fraudulently obtained the materials in disguise of servicing a supply contract she had with a construction company.
“The materials comprised 9,900 bags of cement, 381 tonnes of imported iron rods and 468 tonnes of local iron rods,” he said.
Uwujaren said the petitioner alleged that the suspect issued two post-dated cheques of N40 million each which were returned unpaid.
He stated that the petitioner further alleged that all efforts to make the suspect pay up the balance proved abortive.
