Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo has presented cheques worth N21.37 million to beneficiaries of 10 workers of the State public service who died during active service.
Presenting the cheques to the beneficiaries of the deceased at government house in Benin on Monday, Obaseki said the money was given under the life Insurance Policy of the State Contributory Pension Scheme.
The governor assured beneficiaries of every Edo worker registered under the Contributory Pensions Scheme that they would not be abandoned as something would be made available for them.
He said: “We want to demonstrate to the deceased families, Civil and Public servants as well as people of Edo that the government will never abandon them because their loved ones died in active service.”
Obaseki said that the scheme was less than two years old and beneficiaries of deceased had started receiving some amount due to enrollment into the pension scheme.
He said: “I hope now that our labour union is convinced that the presentation of cheques to deceaseds’ families of Edo government is real as this is the second edition in the state.
“Edo government under my stewardship will never deceive Edo workers, as we hold them in high esteem and it is our goal that workers get their full dues.”
The governor expressed hope that the State workers would work with his administration to develop similar arrangements to own their own houses under a housing arrangement.
He said: “I am hopeful that next year we will finalise our Health Insurance arrangement so that workers don’t need to think about the cost of health care.”
Meanwhile, Governor Obaseki has disclosed that his administration keyed into the Federal Government productivity award programme to reward outstanding civil servants in the state.
The governor said his administration placed high premium on hard work and was doing its best to ensure workers got what they were entitled to.
He said: “It’s on record we pay salaries in Edo on or before the 26th of every month and we want workers to put in their best in terms of being productive.”
Obaseki said his administration would hold a section this week where workers would be recognized and prizes given to outstanding public servants in the last one year.
He said: “This will enable workers who have put in their best to get recognition and rewarded for their hard work and contribution to productivity in Edo State.”
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Edo chapter, Emmanuel Ademokun, who witnessed the presentation of the cheques thanked the governor for keying into the new pension scheme.
Ademokun said that the new scheme had proved to be better than the old one which made it difficult for deceased families to access their pension and gratuity easily as at when due.
He added: “We are grateful to the governor for the peace and harmony in the state as labour has not gone on strike in the last two years under the Obaseki-led administration.
“This is a pass mark for the government.”
