The Edo State House of Assembly on Wednesday in Benin passed a resolution calling on Governor Adams Oshiomhole to reinstate the 926 primary school teachers disengaged in 2013.
The 926 teachers were disengaged for either falsification of their age or their primary school leaving certificates.
Moving the motion for the reinstatement of the teachers, Hon. Folly Ogedengbe, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, said the issue of age falsification was not peculiar to the 926 teachers.
Ogedengbe, APC Owan East, said: “Mr. Speaker, age falsification is not peculiar to the teachers alone.
“It is an act that everybody is involved.
“Everybody in the civil service is involved in the scourge.”
The committee called on the state governor to reinstate the teachers whose names were removed from the state’s pay roll forthwith.
The committee also recommended that the state government should take urgent steps to update the age of those who were caught to have falsified their age.
It recommended that the state government should embark on the training and re-training of teachers to enhance their productivity.
According to the committee, the state government should put machinery in motion to promote primary and secondary school teachers as at when due.
The lawmakers unanimously adopted the recommendation with a call that the primary school teachers be paid their 10.5 per cent allowance since their counterparts in the secondary school had been paid.
The Speaker, Hon. Uyi Igbe, directed that copies of the resolution be sent to Oshiomhole; the State Universal Basic Education Board; and the Commissioner for Higher and Basic Education for immediate implementation.
