Dr. Ebikwo Ayegba, a dentist with the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, has warned against the use of alcohol based mouth washing substances.
Ayegba told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja that the consistent use of alcohol based mouthwash could result in oral cancer.
He said: “Even mouthwashes that are not alcohol based should be used periodically.
“We have normal oral bacteria in the mouth that protect us against the ones that are injurious, so when you use mouthwash it destroys the healthy ones.
“Mouthwashes should be used with caution; mouthwashes should not be used as a substitute for regular brushing of the teeth.
“Even when they can be helpful in lessening the risk of periodontal disease and cavities, they should always be used in conjunction with good hygiene habits.”
Ayegba advised people to ensure they brush their teeth twice a day and visit the dentist to have their teeth checked every six months.
