Warring youths from Ogbe-Ijoh/Aladja communities in Delta State who have been battling over the age-long boundary dispute between the two communities have agreed to sheath their swords to enable the state government resolve the crisis once and for all.
Sources said the youths have decided to let peace reign to enable the state government to implement the resolution of the boundary committee set up by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to look into the matter.
Reports say the crisis has led to the death and destruction of properties worth millions in the two communities since it broke out.
The Special Assistant to Okowa on Youth and Community Development, Eric Omare, who facilitated the peace parlay by the youths in Warri on Tuesday, said government was doing everything possible to resolve the crisis.
The youths were led to the close door meeting by Ekere Christmas for Ogbe-Ijoh, while Wisdom Onotomre led those from Aladja community.
Also in attendance at the meeting were the President of the foremost Ijaw Youth Council, Udengs Eradiri; the President of Urhobo Progress Union, youth wing, Ovie Igho, who doubles as Special Assistant to Okowa on Conflict Resolution, Youth Affairs.
Arising from the meeting, the youths promised to maintain the peace and forestall a likely breakdown of law and order in their respective communities.
They resolved and agreed to go back home and discuss with their leaders on the peace building processes that would be put in place by the state government.
While appealing to the state government to as a matter of urgency hasten the implementation of the white paper in respect to the demarcation of the buffer zone, the youths pledged their commitment to the peace process and commended the government for the moves.
Meanwhile, Governor Okowa is expected to hold another round of peace meeting with leaders and stakeholders from both communities on Wednesday, sources said.
