Ahead of the 25 local government areas elections in Delta State, the state wing of the National Union of Road Transport Workers has plotted to denounce any of its member who eyes elective positions without resignation.
Its state Chairman, Comrade Ifeanyi Obi, in Asaba on Thursday said the union was strictly for drivers and road workers and not for politicians.
Obi said any member of the union who wants to contest election either at the state or local levels should resign his position.
He said: “We are not politicians.
“We can vote in election as citizens of Nigeria but we are not members of political parties.
“Anybody who wants to contest for elective position in the forthcoming council and general elections is free to resign.
“You cannot be a member of NURTW and contesting council or general elections.”
While Obi urged politicians to conduct their affairs with dignity during the electioneering period and desist from hijacking the union’s structure to perpetrate electoral fraud, he warned his members from being used as instrument of destruction.
He added: “Members of NURTW are peaceful.
“We are not thugs and cannot be used for election malpractice.
“Any of our members who is involved in election malpractice, will, of course, be sanctioned.”
