The Nigeria Labour Congress on Wednesday said the decision of the Corporate Affairs Commission to delist 49,000 companies over failure to file returns would not in any way affect workers.
The General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Ezon, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
Ozo-Ezon said that the delisting of the 49,000 companies would not affect workers or the economy in anyway, saying that many of such companies were not functional.
NAN recalls that the CAC had last month said that it would delist 49,000 registered companies from its register for failing to file tax returns after the statutory period.
Ozo-Ezon, who was the immediate past Chief Economist of the NLC, explained that many of the companies were registered to perpetrate fraud and shoddy deals.
He said that those who worked for such businesses might not need to be protected.
He said: “Companies that do not file returns cannot be companies that actually have workers.
“Many of these companies are not established with retinue of workers but portfolio companies and they are no threat to workers.
“Those that are genuinely in business have employees and they are the companies that file returns.”
The NLC general secretary said that it was important for companies that were registered to maintain their registration requirements and also file their returns.
Ozo-Ezon urged company operators to ensure that they filed their returns in case there was need for change of business addresses or other transactions.
“For me, this is the right process of doing a better business and companies should always do the needful in the overall interest of the economy,” he said.
