In order to promote reading culture in Nigeria, De Minaret International is organising a week-long Islamic Book Exhibition in Abuja.
In a statement issued by Dr. Saheed Abdur-Rauf, the Chief Executive Officer of the group, the event will be formally declared open at the National Mosque Conference Hall, Abuja on May 10 at 9am.
The week-long book exhibition has as its theme: “Uthman Dan Fodio – Our heritage of knowledge and moral reform.”
The statement added that Prof. Ibraheem Sulayman of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State will deliver a lecture on the theme of the exhibition.
The formal opening will be chaired by retired General Bagudu Mamman, while the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, would be the Special Guest of Honour.
The statement stated that His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, is expected to declare the book exhibition open as the spiritual father of the day.
The group said that one other means it employs in promoting reading culture was through exhibitions and book fair.
De Minaret International is a non-governmental literary organisation devoted to the promotion of reading culture among Muslims.
“With literary activities that spanned a decade, it has imported more than 85,000 titles of Islamic books published by worldwide publishers and make such books available to the reading Muslim public at highly subsidised cost,” it said.
Abdur-Rauf said the main objective of the exhibition was to enlighten Muslims on the best way to imbibe a reading culture and remind them to keep reading in line with Islamic practise.
More than 1,000 titles of Islamic books on Quranic exegesis, hadith collections, Islamic jurisprudence, Islamic biography, Islamic Economics and socio-political thoughts, children books will be on display from more than 15 publishers across the world.
