Manchester United have activated a one-year extension clause in David de Gea’s contract to keep him at the club until the summer of 2020.
Negotiations over a long-term deal continue to be thrashed out but United’s top brass have moved quickly to stop European clubs being able to talk to the goalkeeper over signing a pre-contract agreement in January.
De Gea, whose contract was due to end next summer, has been locked in talks with United after growing increasingly frustrated with his salary and wanted the club to match his wages with the likes of Alexis Sanchez, who earns £350,000 a week.
Sportsmail exclusively revealed on Saturday night that French giants Paris Saint-Germain were poised to snap up the keeper at the end of his contract next summer.
The Spaniard, who has won United’s player of the year award four times in the past five seasons, was attracted to the £300,000-a-week deal tabled by the Ligue 1 leaders, which would have made him the highest-earning keeper in the world.
But with De Gea tied down for at least another season, talks with PSG will now be put on the back burner with United desperate for the player to put pen to paper on a longer deal.
