The Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung, was at the head of a long list of administrators, friends, family members, journalists and concerned persons who thronged the residence of the late Coach Shuaibu Amodu in Surulere, Lagos on Saturday for the eighth day prayer for the departed NFF Technical Director.
A solemn atmosphere prevailed as the one hour ceremony at the late tactician’s Adegoke Street, off Alhaji Masha residence was witnessed by the Minister, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme (NFF Deputy General Secretary), David Atabo (NFF Director of Finance and Admin), Abdulrafiu Yusuf (NFF assistant director, technical), Siji Lagunju (NFF assistant director, technical) and other important personalities in Nigeria football.
Writing in the condolence register, Dalung noted: “Coach, is this life? You came and we discussed about the future of football in Nigeria but you suddenly disappeared. Why are the mighty falling?
“I will only ask God to reward you because humanity was not too kind to you. We didn’t know you but your work surpass everything. A great tree has fallen. There is darkness all over the place. Amodu, please give football in Nigeria light. Adieu.”
Amodu, 58, coached the Nigeria senior team on four occasions, during which he qualified the team for the FIFA World Cup on two occasions and led them to third place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2002 and 2010.
He also coached the team to fourth place finish at the FIFA Confederations Cup (then known as Intercontinental Tournament for the King Fahd Cup) in 1995, at the age of 36.
The 40-day prayer for the late Shaibu Amodu will hold at his Okpella, Edo State home next month.
