An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered that a 29-year-old Ugochukwu Okafor, who allegedly defiled his 12-year-old stepdaughter, be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
The Nigeria Police charged Okafor, who resides in Oworonshoki, Lagos State, with one count of defilement.
The Magistrate, M.O. Tanimola, who did not take Okafor’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
She adjourned the case until May 12 for DPP advice.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Donjour Perezi, told the court that Okafor committed the offence sometime in 2021 in his residence at Oworonshoki.
He said that the defendant defiled his 12-year-old stepdaughter.
The police said that the matter was reported at the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Agency, Alausa.
He said Okafor sexually abused his stepdaughter twice and her mother, who is aware and even caught her husband red-handed once, refused to take any legal action.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that defilement attracts life imprisonment according to the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2005.
