Justice Agata Okeke of a Federal High Court sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State on Monday granted former Governor Aliyu Akwe-Doma of the state permission to travel abroad for medical checkup.
The judge gave the order while ruling on the application filed by the defence counsel.
Okeke said: “Since there was no objection to this application, the accused person is hereby granted the permission by this honourable court to travel to India for medical treatment.”
The judge also directed that all travelling documents of the accused deposited in the court be returned to him to enable him travel for three weeks from February 15.
Okeke, however, directed that the former governor must return all the travelling documents to the court on or before March 10, 2016.
Earlier, Olalekan Ojo, the defence counsel, had applied to the court that his client be granted permission to travel abroad for medical checkup and would return on March 9.
Okpe Okiyeme, the prosecution counsel, however, did not object to the application but observed that the application did not mention when the accused would return.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that after correcting the application to include when the accused would return, the court adjourned the case to March 10 for continuation of hearing.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting Akwe-Doma; Timothy Anjide, the former Secretary to the State Government; and Dauda Egwa, the former Accountant-General of the state.
The three men are facing a 10-count charge bordering on money laundering and other financial crimes.
