Four men were on Wednesday sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for being in possession of counterfeits naira notes.
The convicts – Aminu Haruna, Haruna Muhammed Lawal, Usman Abdullahi and Awual Muhammed – were convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each by Justice B. B. Aliyu of the Federal High Court sitting in Yola, Adamawa State.
They were arrainged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The Commission’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said the convicts had earlier been arraigned on November 4, 2014 on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, possession and dealing in counterfeits naira notes.
One of the counts reads: “That you Usman Abdullahi, Awual Muhammed, Aminu Haruna and Haruna Muhammed Lawal sometime in May 2014 behind Jimeta Modern Market, Jimeta Town, Yola North Local Government of Adamawa State, did conspire among yourselves to effect an unlawful purpose thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 518 (6) and punishable under Section 518 (7) of the Criminal Code Act, LFN 2004.”
The accused were convicted on two counts each and sentenced to five years imprisonment for conspiracy and possession of counterfeit naira notes.
The sentences are to run concurrently.
