Commonwealth Games: Delta plans big for Sports’ Writers

Sports’ Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Delta state has been described as “heroes of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s administration.”
The oil rich state has since the advent of democracy in 1999 and all through the defunct administration of Chief James Ibori been at the fore-front of sports in Nigeria.
Since the Governor was sworn in 2007, he has achieved miracles in Sports and received several accolades, especially with the blessing of Blessing Okagbare.
When SWAN members in the state, led by their chairman, Comrade Mike Ikeogwu, flanked by his Secretary, Jude Agbeyeke, visited the Commissioner for Information, Chike Ogeah, in Asaba, the state capital, the rough edges between the association and the state’s Sports Commission, was smoothened.
The Commissioner did not only set standards for the upliftment of the association in the state, he vowed to work out modalities for a world-wide recognition of its members.
He said, “I must find out while the Sports’ Commission in the state and SWAN are not keying into the objectives setting up the commission. The lingering lacuna must be filled up so that you can work together.
The Commissioner said the “Sports’ writers are heroes of Governor Uduaghan’s administration”, assuring that the state government would help facilitate their participation at the Commonwealth Games.
Earlier, the state chairman of SWAN harped on the need for the state to recognize the enormous work his group was doing for the state.
He wondered why the state relegated the association to the background.
He said, “We are now beggars in our own state. We don’t want to go to the pages of newspapers; we want to engage the state constructively”.
