Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, the Catholic Archbishop of Jos, has donated relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons in Kassa, in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau.
The donation was done on Friday, through the Justice Development and Peace Commission, a Non-Governmental Organisation under the archdiocese.
Presenting the items, Rev. Fr Stephen Akpe, an Assistant Coordinator in the commission, said the gesture was to cushion hardships being faced by the displaced persons.
Akpe said: “We are all know that it is not your own making that you are here; none of you is happy to be here.
“But because situation calls for it, we decided to come and identify with you.
“The archbishop wanted to be here personally, but he is presently on official function outside the country, so he asked us to come on his behalf.
“There is nothing we will give you that will be equal to what you have lost, but the little we have come with is just to support you.”
The cleric urged the IDPs to continue to pray for return of total peace in the state, and other areas affected by crisis in the country.
He urged government to intensify effort to ensure that the displaced persons return back home in the shortest possible time.
Items donated include 25 bags of rice, 30 bags of maize, six bags of beans, six cartons of seasoning, five bags of salt and 25 bags containing used clothes.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that over 12,000 persons were displaced and properties worth millions destroyed following recent attacks by gunmen on communities in the area.
