Calabar Rovers’ players protest non-payment of salaries, match bonuses

Players of Rovers Football Club of Calabar, Cross River State on Friday staged a protest over the non-payment of their match bonuses, allowances and 17 months’ salaries.
The team’s Captain, Moses Asari, told the News Agency of Nigeria during the protest in Calabar that the players were tired of listening to excuses from government officials.
NAN recalls that the club, which plays in the lower cadre of Nigeria’s football league, is owned by the Cross River State Government.
Asari said: “Honestly, we are tired.
“For the past 17 months, we have not received any salary or match bonus.
“The players are not happy.
“That was the reason for our protest to the Governor’s Office.”
Asari, however, disclosed that the state’s Commissioner for Sports, Asu Okang, had promised to discuss their matter with the Governor, Ben Ayade.
He said: “The commissioner said we should give him up till Monday and he has assured us that something positive will be done.
“We are waiting for him until Tuesday.
“After that day, whatever happens, we will decide the next line of action.”
When contacted for the club’s reaction, its Media Officer, Oqua Etim, said the club management had not said anything regarding the matter.
