The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, promised after his emergence that the party’s National Chairman, Senator Iyorcha Ayu, will resign.
Wike said it was therefore shocking that after making the promise, Abubakar initially went silent and then backed down.
The Governor said this in an interview on Friday, which was televised on national television stations.
He said among those that can testify to the promise by the former Vice President were the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, and his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Makinde.
He said: “He (Abubakar) agreed with us that Ayu had to go.
“He said we should give him one week.
“That we should go and work out the modalities.
“Fintiri should tell Nigerians if this is not correct.
“Makinde and co should tell Nigerians if this is not correct.
“We didn’t hear from him again within that one week.
“If he respects us, what stops him from calling us back to say I’ve gone to look at these things again, that there would be constitutional issues.
“All we heard him say later was that there were constitutional issues.”
