The Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the All Progressives Congress of being the mastermind of the violence that occurred at the Save Rivers Movement in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State on Sunday.
The PDP equally raised the alarm over the increasing spate of violence in the state, which it accused the Governor Rotimi Amaechi administration, the Save Rivers Movement and the APC of masterminding to continue to create a state of insecurity to justify their call for the removal of the Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu.
The party, in a statement signed by the Special Adviser, Media, to the state Chairman of the PDP, Jerry Needam, was reacting to another violence that erupted on Sunday at Bori, the traditional headquarters of the Ogoni people.
The crisis, which allegedly led to the shooting of two Ogoni youths, the PDP said, followed a local resistance of the APC, Amaechi and the Save Rivers Movement by the Ogoni people.
The Ogoni people, the PDP statement said, had earlier resolved to reject the APC and Amaechi in the area.
The resistance of the rally by the Ogoni people, Needam further alleged, prompted the Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Bariledum Greg Nwiedam, to resort to thuggery and violence by hiring thugs who unleashed mayhem on the people from 2am to about 11am on Sunday.
The PDP said the heavily armed thugs came in their numbers and shot sporadically, leaving the two youths badly injured.
It said one was shot on the leg and another shot in the stomach.
Nwiedam, according to the PDP, had in a radio announcement on Saturday, while making public the event on Sunday, allegedly said: “Kana aa ke, e si wee be (meaning: Khana arise, let’s go and fight).”
The aim of such provocative message, the party said, was to recruit, incite, create tension and panic.
The PDP said the invitation of Khana people to war by Nwiedam manifested in the crisis witnessed in Bori on Sunday.
The PDP therefore condemned the violence in Bori, blaming Amaechi, the APC, the Save Rivers Movement and Nwiedam, whom it alleged acted on the instructions of Amaechi to disturb the peace of Ogoni people, shut down churches, shoot innocent youths, wound others and destroy properties of innocent people in the area.
“The condition of these youth shot today according to reports, are very critical and unstable,” the PDP said.
It said it is indeed miffed at this trend, shortly after a member of the APC, Hon. Chidi Lloyd, wilfully attempted to kill Hon. Michael Chinda, and also caused the death of another PDP member in Emuoha and a police officer.
The party added: “We therefore call on the police to arrest the Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Mr. Bariledum Greg Nwiedam, who on the instructions of Governor Rotimi Amaechi masterminded the crisis and shooting in Bori today.
“This sad shooting at Bori today is coming few days after another shooting incident in Ogun State where 8 APC members were shot in an internal crisis of APC. We condemn APC’s resort to violence in Rivers State and the country.
“The Peoples Democratic Party abhors violence and we shall continue to preach peace, unity and progress of Rivers State.
“We shall hold Amaechi and APC responsible for any breakdown of law and order in the State as a result of his quest for power.”
