Ahead of the meeting with leaders of the Lake Chad Basin Commission and Republic of Benin, President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday met with the Service Chiefs.
The meeting with leaders of Nigeria’s neighbouring countries is billed to take place at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.
Top of the agenda of the meeting is the security situation in Nigeria and other parts of the Lake Chad region.
He received briefing from the Security Chiefs on the situation in Borno State and other parts of the North East.
The National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, led the security chiefs to the Defence Guest House, Maitama, Abuja, where the meeting was held for about 90 minutes.
Present were Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh; and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jubrin.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismail, who was also in attendance, told State House correspondents that the meeting was called to brief the President on the preparations for the LCBC leaders’ meeting.
Ismail said: “We came to brief Mr. President on the meeting of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, which the head of states are attending tomorrow.
“The arrangement of the meeting held between the Chief of Defence Staff of the Lake Chad Basin and ministers of defence, which is culminating in the Presidents’ meeting tomorrow (today).
“We have discussed the issue of the operationalisation of the Multinational Joint Task Force and the citing of its headquarters in N’Djamena and the contribution from various states.
“This is with the objective of fighting the insurgency within that region.
“Some issues came out that the President identified.
“He wants us to see the end of this fight for the purpose of peace, security and prosperity of the region.”
The LSBC leaders expected at the meeting are Paul Biya (Cameroun), Idriss Deby (Chad), Mohammadou Issoufou (Niger) and Boni Yayi (Republic of Benin).
