As part of their bid to ensure that Nigeria’s economy is stable, former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida; and Former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar have called on Nigerians to support the incoming government led by General Muhammadu Buhari.
The leaders made the call when they paid a goodbye visit to the Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, on Monday.
They said the peace enjoyed after the general elections must be sustained.
Babangida, who was joined by his son, Mohammed Babangida, said for any government to succeed its people must support it.
According to Babangida: “I am concerned just as other Nigerians, whether during transition or not.
“Every developing country has its own peculiar problems and there has to be a government to find solution to the problems confronting its nation.”
Also, the Chairman of the Nigeria Peace Accord, General Abubakar, while calling on the need for sustained peace, charged Governor Aliyu to endeavour to share his experiences with the incoming administration in the state so as to sustain the unity enjoyed so far.
Earlier, Aliyu, while thanking the duo who came to say bye to him after eight years as governor of Niger State, said: “My elder brothers are very instrumental to the peace and unity we are enjoying in the country today.
“Many Nigerians were apprehensive before the general elections, but this is one of the most peaceful elections we ever had in the country.
“I am very happy for us because the people accepted the results without bickering.
“We believe our two elder brothers have the knowledge and vast experience and a lot to offer and do for the country.
“Many of us may not know that they did underground work to douse the tension because of their concern for the unity and development of the country.
“Their actions are always for the best of the country.
“We must support the incoming governments to succeed.”
The generals arrived the governor’s residence in Tunga in a Mercedez Benz S600 Niger MNA 450AE at about 2:40pm.
