AUN feeds 270,000 IDPS, plans to do more – President

The American University of Nigeria, located in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, has since taken holistic approach in providing relief and humanitarian aids to the internally displaced persons seeking shelter with families and those sheltered in camps, churches and mosques in Adamawa State.
Since the AUN and Adamawa Peace Makers Initiative took relief materials to IDPs to Mubi and environs, the university has followed up in rallying relief materials and much needed food and aid through local organisations to families and neighbourhoods around Yola, Jimeta, Vinukuland, Sangare, Bole, Damare and every other part of Adamawa State.
The President of the university, Margee Ensign, while addressing the media on Thursday in Lagos, stressed the need to do more for the IDPs following their deteriorating conditions, while the Federal Government has not been magnanimous enough to take care of their needs.
Ensign said this was why AUN came to their rescue.
According to the president: “Our vision is to be Africa’s development university.
“That is why we have embraced this humanitarian gesture to the internally displaced persons in Yola and environs.
“And I can tell you we have not deviated from our main objectives of building models in Nigeria to solve problems.
“The Religious and Adamawa Peace Initiative have been leading efforts to provide relief.
“Muslim and Christian leaders work side by side to provide food and aid to almost 270,000 people.
“Mosque and cathedrals in Yola host weekly food distributions, with as many as 6,000 people, mostly women and children, lining up to receive rice, maize and beans.
“The coalition has also given skills training to adults and educated children whose schools have been burned down by Boko Haram.”
The American educator, who has spent almost five years steering the ship of the privately-owned university, revealed that funds for these efforts have run dry.
She said: “I’m deeply grateful for the $100,000 aid received from the United States of America, but that money lasted only a month and the coalition desperately needs foods, medicine, malaria nets and vaccines as measles has broken out in the camps.”
