AUN emerges best digital varsity library in Nigeria

The American University of Nigeria, located in Yola, Adamawa State, has emerged the higher institution with the best digital library services in Nigeria.
The award was conferred on the AUN by the Committee of Universities Librarians of Nigerian Universities.
The award, received on behalf of the institution by its Director of Library Services, Ahmed Demirhan, was given to the AUN on November 19, 2012.
The plaque for the award for 2012, signed by the Chairman of the Committee of Universities Librarians of Nigerian Universities, Prof. Benki S.H. Womboh, reads: “Committee of Universities Librarians of Nigerian Universities Excellence Award for The Best University Digital Library Services in Nigeria.”
Commenting on the award, Demirhan said the AUN library is 99.9 per cent e-library.
He said it has close to 9,000 academic journals and about one million newspapers and magazines.
He said the library operates now at the same level of usability with American and British universities.
Demirhan said based on his experience in AUN, the notion that Nigerians do not read was wrong.
He said what was needed was the provision of the right environment to encourage reading.
He said: “Those who say Nigerians don’t like reading are not conversant with what is happening.
“All you need to do is create the right environment.”
