ATM/BVN scam: Police alert public on internet fraudsters

The Enugu State Police Command has alerted members of the public on the operations of suspected internet syndicate that specialises in hacking into bank accounts in Enugu.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, said this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu on Wednesday.
It noted that the hackers had devised a way of hacking into bank accounts through the Bank Verification Number and Automated Teller Machine numbers.
The statement said: “It has been revealed that some unidentified internet fraudsters hacked into unsuspecting victims bank accounts and siphoned their money via BVN and ATM.
“To this end, members of the public are advised to be guided by this information in terms of desisting from giving their BVN or ATM card numbers to unknown persons.
“And also to ignore such messages calling for the activation of BVN or ATM card from any number or its like whether through email, SMS or phone calls.
“While bank customers should confirm from their bank service customers’ care or account officer to avoid falling into the trap of fraudsters.”
The statement, however, promised that the police would uncover the fraudsters and prosecute them.
