Bergoglio, 76, succeeds Benedict XVI, who resigned in February due to old age.
Bergoglio is the first Latin American to become a pope.
He is to adopt the title Francis 1.
He belongs to the order of the Jesuit.
The Jesuit are believed to be more liberal Catholics.
Many had anticipated the emergence of a pope who will be less than 75 years old.
