Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos has decried the rising spate of violence, hunger and unemployment, particularly, among Nigerian youths.
Kaigama said this on Tuesday at the opening of the 16th General Assembly of the archdiocese in Jos.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event was tagged “Revival of the Catholic Traditions and Etiquette in the Contemporary Nigerian Church: The Catholic Archdiocese of Jos in Focus”.
The Archbishop said the challenges that had bedeviled the country since independence were as result of failure of the political class.
The prelate said he would have been gladdened, if the current trend of defections in the country’s political space were totally in the interest of the masses.
Kaigama said: “How I wish the spate of defections in the country is about new breed of leaders who put people rather than themselves first.
“How I wish it were a sudden realisation that those entrusted with political offices have dashed the hopes of most Nigerians.
“Close to 60 years of independence and even the many years of our democratic practice, Nigeria is still struggling to provide adequate social and food security, and patriotic national identity.
“Today, we are being consumed by violence, especially violence generated by hunger and youth unemployment.
“So, it will have been a thing of joy if all these defections could bring about healing the wounds of ethnic, political and religious indifference being experienced in the country.”
The archbishop called on governments at all levels to bridge the gap of disunity, as well as give maximum attention to solving the problems facing the nation.
He charged the security agencies to intensify efforts to end the nefarious activities of kidnapper and militant herdsmen in the country.
