The Peoples Democratic Party, Rivers State Chapter, has described the All Progressives Congress’ response on the claim of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of being denied access to the Government House, Port Harcourt by the police as a justification of its funding by the Rivers State governor.
The party accused Governor Amaechi of wasting billions of naira belonging to Rivers State people on the formation, maintenance and funding of the APC’s activities in his quest to secure a platform to actualize his 2015 political ambition.
The PDP, in a statement signed by Jerry Needam, the Special Adviser on Media to the Chairman of the state chapter of the PDP, Felix Obuah, said it is unfortunate and a disgrace to “our political system that the APC does not have a clear and progressive party manifesto and has proved itself as losing focus on major political events in the country as it has reduced itself to a weapon of political war for Governor Amaechi.”
Needam added: “From inception, the All Progressives Congress has never hidden its identity and means of subsistence. It is not a hidden fact that the party is feeding on Rivers State resources made available to it by Governor Amaechi who has exhibited prodigality in governance and in the management of the state resources.
“The statement credited to the Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in respect of the claim by Amaechi of being stopped by the Police from entering Government House is a product and manifestation of financial relationship between the governor and the opposition party.”
The PDP said that it is not surprising that APC, which has been using its machineries as if it is Amaechi spokesman, is attacking the police for carrying out its legitimate duty, stressing that the entire plan of action by the party is founded on blackmail and destruction of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
While calling on Rivers State people and Nigerians not to take the APC’s statement seriously, the PDP urged the opposition party to function with some level of civility and strive to provide a true, credible and independent platform for the opposition.
The party also called on Amaechi to stop squandering Rivers State resources, pursing his ambition and blackmailing Jonathan, the Rivers State Police Command and leaders of the PDP.
It said Amaechi’s claim on the actions of the police is frivolous and unfounded.
