The Anambra State Government says it is set to destroy the illegal and indiscriminate speed breakers across the state to ensure safety of road users.
Marcel Ifejiofor, Commissioner for Works in the state, said this in an interview with the News agency of Nigeria in Awka on Friday.
Ifejiofor said government would also destroy speed breakers built by individuals or communities that had no approval from the appropriate authority.
He said the speed breakers were unprofessionally built and constituted grave danger to road users.
The commissioner, who acknowledged that the decline in the number of road accidents in Awka was due to speed breakers built on strategic road, urged motorists to drive carefully and observe traffic rules.
He said: “There are a number of speed breakers on the highways in Anambra, motorists in the state and those coming in are advised to observe them.
“We have them at Army Barracks, Amawbia, Regina Ceali, Government House and other strategic areas in the state.
“But we have noticed the construction of bumps on most roads in Anambra, these speed breakers are not approved, they are unprofessionally executed with steep gradients.
“These illegal speed breakers are damaging vehicles and will no longer be tolerated.
“Very soon, we shall start removing them, we have specification for speed breakers, if you want to install; write to this ministry and we will supervise it.”
Ifejiofor also said the ministry was embarking on massive repairs of all roads in the state with 10 contractors working concurrently in the three senatorial zones.
He said while the Anambra Road Maintenance Agency was patching the potholes, the contractors would be working on the roads severely damaged by erosion; as well as open up new ones.
Some of the roads he listed include: Aguleri-Adani Road in Anyamelum, Ukwulu-Enugu-Agidi-Nawgu in Awka, 14.2 km Mbutu-Umunankwo road in Ogbaru, Osamala –Oguikpele road also in Ogbaru, Oraifite and Azia roads.
According to him, the state is working on getting approval from the Federal Ministry of Works for the repairs of federal roads in the state.
“ARMA is only mandated to patch roads, but because of the damage, Gov. Willie Obiano directed the ministry to intervene; so we have appointed over 10 contractors to fix these roads.
He said: “The Governor directed that we intervene because Anambra is a gateway state, so we are talking with the Controller of Works in Anambra.
“But we are working while waiting for the outcome of our discussions.”
Ifejiofor assured the public that the quality of the projects to be executed would stand the test of time.
He added: “I am a field person, my promise to Anambra is high quality roads.”
