Anambra poll: IPAC wants INEC to provide level playing field

Chief Bartho Igwedibe, the Chairman of the Interparty Advisory Council in Anambra State, has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission to provide a level playing field for the smooth conduct of the November 18 governorship election in the state.
Igwedibe, who spoke to journalists on Tuesday in Awka, said the INEC was critical in ensuring a violence-free campaign and election.
He also said the council was worried over reports of tension resulting from the governorship primaries held by some political parties.
He said: “It is very sad to hear that somebody died in the course of the governorship primary conducted by one of the political parties last weekend as well as the provocative comments credited to some aspirants.
“Some of these situations brew violence during elections and as members of IPAC in Anambra; we do not want such things to keep happening because it will snowball to big problems during the November 18 election.
“I do know that INEC by law has the powers to regulate the conduct of politicians before, during and after elections.
“I want them to be alive to their responsibilities by making sure that there is a level playing field for all contestants.”
Igwedibe, who is also the chairman of Accord Party in Anambra State, said that the council would organise a debate for all governorship candidates and their deputies.
He said the debate would provide a platform for the candidates to present their manifesto and showcase their ability to govern.
Igwedike explained: “In the past, people emerged from nowhere to contest the governorship of Anambra State and the situation has not helped governance in the state.
“Our thinking as IPAC is that we hold a debate and through this platform, we will be able to let the state know the people that have good credentials to govern.
“At the same time, those that are ill-equipped will be exposed.”
