Alhaji Muhammad Jauro, the Chairman of the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission, has said that the state of emergency imposed on the state would not hinder the conduct of council poll.
Fielding questions from newsmen on Saturday in Damaturu, Jauro explained that the state of emergency did not prohibit political activities and the conduct of elections.
He said the commission was prepared to conduct the election any time from now as most of the non-sensitive election materials had been procured.
He said: “We have on ground most of the materials required for the election and government has released funds for logistics.
“We have also obtained the updated voters register from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
“The commission is however yet to print ballot papers until a date is fixed and the actual number of political parties participating in the election ascertained.”
The chairman observed that the security situation in the state had improved and that the atmosphere was now conducive for the election.
He said the commission would meet with stakeholders, including political parties, to deliberate on the proposed election.
Jauro thanked political parties, politicians, opinion leaders and security operatives in the state for their cooperation during the sensitization campaign on voter education embarked upon by YSIEC.
The local government election was initially scheduled to hold in June this year, but had to be postponed due to security challenges.
