The Ekiti State House of Assembly has described the spate of kidnapping in the state as worrisome, calling on security operatives to be alive to their responsibilities.
The statement was the assembly’s reaction to the abduction of a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Akingbade, in Ido Ekiti on Tuesday night by three gunmen at the Mission House.
The Assembly tasked the security operatives in the state to be alive to their responsibilities and curtail the rising wave of kidnapping.
Oluwawole said the Assembly would continue to partner with the security agencies to ensure that the state remains safe for the residents and intending investors.
He promised that every available step would be taken by the Fayose-led government to nip the situation in the bud before it becomes a huge burden of distraction to the present administration.
Describing the increasing kidnapping as an embarrassment to the state, the Speaker charged all the citizens to see the responsibility of making Ekiti State a crime-free society as a collective task, which should not be left in the hands of the security agencies to perform.
He said: “The present government has been doing its best to in curtailing the menace, but such should be complemented by members of the public through the release of useful information that could assist the security operatives in checking the trend of insecurity.
“The kidnapping of the reverend father Akingbade is condemnable. This was alien to Ekiti culture until recently, when some unscrupulous elements bent on making Ekiti ungovernable because of their selfish reasons.
“We pray for the quick release of the man of God. But we restate our readiness to work with the government to unearth the perpetrators within the shortest possible time.”
