New Cardiff City signing, Sammy Ameobi, has issued a warning to the rest of the Championship, insisting he’s ready to help fire the Bluebirds to Premier League promotion next season.
The 23-year-old winger has moved from Newcastle to the Welsh capital on a season-long loan and is currently with his new teammates at the Bluebirds’ bootcamp in Leicestershire.
After a positive start to his career with the Magpies, he is yet to make the breakthrough in the top-flight, but Ameobi insists his main order of business now is ensuring Cardiff make it up to the big time themselves.
“Promotion’s our aim this season,” Ameobi told the BBC.
“That’s one of the reasons I joined because I want to be part of a team that’s pushing for the Premier League. The guys are looking really sharp and fit. I think with the squad we’ve got and the good start that we’ve had to pre-season, I think that’s definitely possible.
“I can’t wait to get going. I want to have a full season where I’m playing games and I think that will build my self-confidence and strength as a player and hopefully have a great season.”
The Bluebirds emerged victors from a clutch of Championship sides looking to add Ameobi to their squads for the forthcoming campaign. Both Brighton and Wolves had expressed an interest. But the England under-21 international insisted that after visiting Cardiff and listening to manager Russell Slade, the Bluebirds quickly became his number one choice.
Ameobi added: “Cardiff is the first place I came to and the training ground, the facilities, the stadium, everything is Premier League. When I spoke to the manager, I just really liked what he had to say, his ideas, and I pretty much made my decision from there.”
