A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, has written a letter to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, over the alleged N62 million extortion scandal rocking the Enugu State Police Command, and making demands.
This followed the allegation of the extortion of N62 million from a businessman, Olu Agwu, by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Command.
As part of the allegation, the Command’s Commissioner, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, was accused of being in the know about the development.
Agwu, according to Ozekhome, is a law-abiding citizen residing in Lagos State, who reportedly became a target due to a fabricated scheme orchestrated by his business associate, Michael Umeh, with the alleged support of the Enugu State Police Command, which accused him of being a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.
He was arrested on December 26, 2024.

Ozekhome’s petition was titled: “PETITION AGAINST THE STATE ANTI KIDNAPPING SQUAD, ENUGU STATE POLICE COMMAND FOR THE UNLAWFUL ARREST AND DETENTION OF ONE MR OLU AGWU, AND A DEMAND FOR THE REFUND OF THE SUM OF SIXTY TWO MILLION NAIRIA EXTORTED FROM HIM UNDER DURESS.”
He wrote in part: “We are Solicitors to MR OLU AGWU (‘our client’) on whose authority and at whose behest we write this petition urging you to use your good offices to intervene urgently and right the many wrongs being perpetrated by one Mr Michael Umeh with the active connivance and collaboration of your officers and men of the Anti kidnapping Squad and the Police High Command in Enugu.
BACKGROUND FACTS
“Our client is a Nigerian citizen currently residing in Harmony Estate, off Lambasa, Aja, Lagos State. He is a well-meaning and law-abiding citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We crave your urgent intervention:
“a. To put a halt to this unconscionable and unwholesome practice by Enugu State Police Command which is unwittingly denting the sacred image of the Nigeria Police Force. This will surely invariably lead to serious financial embarrassment to the Police in the form of punitive, aggravated compensatory damages in the event that our client were forced to seek court intervention.
“b. That you use your good offices to halt this descent by the Enugu State Police Command into the lowest level of ignoble conduct as we shall not hesitate to take all necessary legal steps to protect the legal rights of our client as enshrined and guaranteed in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and all extant laws pertaining thereto, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights. We may be compelled to do this without any further recourse to your high office.
“c. A demand for the refund of the sum of Sixty two million Naira (N62,000,000.00) which was extorted by your officers and men of the Anti-kidnap Squad, Enugu State Police Command.
“d. A thorough and unbiased investigation into the trumped-up allegations against our client in the interest of justice and humanity.
“Please, accept the assurances of our warm regards.”
