Aliyu sets up committee to investigate Boko Haram’s presence in Niger

The Niger State Governor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has set up a two-man committee to investigate the activities of a suspected Islamic sect believed to have link with the dreaded Boko Haram group, which has caused crisis in major parts of the North Eastern part of the country.
Governor Aliyu, while acting on a security report given by the League of Imams in the state, on Tuesday set up a two-man committee to investigate the activities of the sect believed to have a base in Bida town.
Aliyu, who gave members of the committee three days to complete their assignment and report back to him to enable government take a decisive action, directed members of the panel to dialogue with the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, in whose domain the alleged sect members are based.
Aliyu emphasized the need for Nigerians to be more vigilant and report such cases to the authorities to forestall any breakdown of law and order in state and the country.
The governor, who received the League of Imam in the state, led by its Chairman, Sheikh Ibrahim Isah Fari, who paid him a thank you visit for the assistance the government rendered to the group during the seminar organized by the forum for Imams in the 19 northern states recently, asked Nigerians to pray for return of peace to troubled areas in the northern part of the country and the nation as a whole.
Aliyu had set up a seven-man committee to study the communiqué released at the end of the seminar, especially the aspect that has to do with the establishment of an Imam Institute in the state, asking the committee, headed by the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Haruna, to acquire 10 hectares of land for the proposed institute and also advice the government on how to ensure legal backing for the organization.
