Senate Minority Leader, Senator Gorge Akume on Thursday, rejected the request made by President Goodluck Jonathan to obtain $1 billion loan to fight insurgency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
It will be recalled that before Senate went on recess, the President had sought approval of the Senate on $1 billion loan to fight insurgency in the country.
The former governor of Benue state said that there was no need to borrow money to fight insurgency if the resources of the country are properly managed by the government.
He recalled that during civil war under the administration of General Yakubu Gown (Rtd) which last for about three years not a dime was borrowed to fight the war.
The APC chieftain asked the Federal Government to take the money from excess crude oil or Sovereign Wealth Fund instead of borrowing to fight insurgency.
According to him, “You don’t need to go and borrow because you want to fight terrorists. General Gown prosecuted Civil war without borrowing a dime from anywhere in the world, because there are pool of funds we can make use of”.
