The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 22 hoodlums suspected of causing the artificial gridlock along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos State to enable them rob motorists and passersby.
The suspects were arrested in four different operations by police detectives.
According to a police source, the raid was initiated by the Lagos State Commissioner, Kayode Aderanti, after receiving series of petitions and complaints from people who take the route.
The operation was undertaken by Aderanti’s Crack Squad, led by Igbinazaka Ugowe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
Another police source said: “Ugowe and his men laid surveillance on the area for days, just watching different miscreants intimate and rob people.
“The arrested suspects have confessed to not only being responsible for the crimes perpetrated along the expressway, but further owed up to being the cause of the unusual traffic gridlock.
“They said the gridlock enables them to perpetrate their crime.”
Meanwhile, residents of the area have written a letter of commendation to Aderanti over the drastic reduction of crime on the expressway.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, Alhaji Sanni Yakubu said the efforts of the police were commendable, adding that Aderanti and his officers should not relent
in their efforts to rid the state of criminals.
