Reigning African queens, the Super Falcons, on Wednesday formally presented the trophy they won at the just concluded African Women Championship in Windhoek, Namibia to President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House, Abuja.
The Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, had told the media shortly after the ladies lifted the trophy that they would be treated with a grand reception on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting.
However, confirming that the grand reception did not hold after all, the Special Adviser Media to the Minister of Sports, Patrick Omorodion, informed that the ladies only presented the trophy to the President, adding that he equally showered encomium on them, scheduling the formal reception on November 5.
Omorodion said: “It is true that President Jonathan did not actually receive the players and officials but they made the formal presentation of the trophy. The president was full of praises for the ladies and he told them that they did the country proud despite the administrative crisis rocking the football federation.
“He did not announce any reward to them after the trophy presentation but I can confirm to you that the reception will now take place November 5 and will be when he will announce the package to them.”
