Libya’s Supreme Court annuls PM’s election

Libya’s Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the election of Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteeq was unconstitutional.
The election, conducted a month ago, followed a chaotic vote and dispute by some lawmakers and judicial experts.
Outgoing Prime Minister, Abdullah al-Thinni, who resigned in April, has refused to hand over power to Maiteeq.
Thinni said he would not hand over because the parliament had given him conflicting reports on the validity of the election.
He said he was waiting for a court decision on the issue.
Meanwhile, Salah Makhzoum, the Deputy Speaker, said Libya’s parliament would respect the Supreme Court ruling that the election of Ahmed Maiteeq as prime minister was unconstitutional.
Makhzoum said for now, Abdullah al-Thinni has been appointed as the caretaker prime minister.
