Equatorial Guinea and Sao Tome and Principe have joined other nations pledging support to help Nigeria battle the menace of insurgency and Boko Haram ravaging the country.
The two countries’ Ambassador to Nigeria, Job Obiang Esono Mbengono and Antonio Correia, disclosed in separate audiences with the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, at the weekend that their countries are worried about the developments in Nigeria and are ready to enlist in the battle against terrorism.
Specifically, Mbengono of Equatorial Guinea said his government sympathized with Nigeria on the unabating terrorism claiming lives and property.
He promised: “We are ready to collaborate with Nigeria to defeat the terrorists.
“Nigeria is a very strategic and important country in Africa.
“We share a lot of things in common in the gulf of Guinea.
“The continent cannot afford the continuous crisis and violence in Nigeria.
“Something must be done urgently to salvage the situation.”
The Ambassador said his country has a lot to learn from Nigeria, pointing out that Guinea’s National legislature, which was unicameral, has been made a bicameral legislature like Nigeria’s.
He said this was courtesy of the 2011 referendum, which endorsed the new arrangement.
In his remarks, Correia brought the solidarity of his country to support Nigeria in the battle against terrorism, even as he pleaded with the abductors of the Chibok schoolgirls to release them.
Responding, Mark thanked the visiting envoys for the solidarity with the government and people of Nigeria pointing out: “We as a people are traumatized with the situation and we are doing everything humanly possible to rescue our girls.”
The Senate president stated that Nigeria remains steadfast in spite of the challenges and will do every thing to ensure peace and stability of the country where all citizens would feel safe, secured and protected under the law.
