The draw for the group phase for the 2021/22 Champions League also saw the best players from last season honoured. BVB striker Erling Haaland was given the trophy for “Forward of the Season”.
Haaland had managed a total of ten goals in eight games in the Champions League in 2020/21 and was the top scorer in the competition.
“It is a great honour for me to receive this prestigious award – an award that motivates me to work even harder and keep improving. Thank you to everyone who voted for me and thank you to everyone who supports me every day. Thanks also to my teammates who contributed to this exceptional award,” Haaland said in a video message. “Now it’s time to start again. It’s time for the Champions League and I can’t wait.”
The previous year’s winner, Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich), and Kylian Mbappé (Paris Saint-Germain) were also nominated for the award for Forward of the Season.
