Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour, has advocated for the publication of specialised law reports in Nigeria.
The eminent jurist, who was the chairman at the official presentation of the Banking and Financial Law Report, edited by Dr. Dapo Olanipekun, the son of the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), in Lagos on Monday said specialised law reports would simplify research for lawyers.
Rhodes-Vivour said: “I have always been of the view that we should have law report in different sectors of law such as the maritime and so on.”
He praised the effort of the publishers and described the law report as unique.
The presentation turned out to be a roll call for who-is-who in the legal and judicial sectors of the country.
The distinguished personalities include NBA President, Okey Wali (SAN); Mallam Yusuf Alli (SAN); Justice Amina Augie, who represented the Acting President of the Court of Appeal; Justice Mohammed Danjuma of the Supreme Court; Justices Okon Abang; Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court, Lagos; and Prof. Taiwo Osipitan (SAN).
Others included the former Lagos Attorney General, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN); Kayode Oladele of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, who represented the Commission’s Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde; Prof. Olusegun Yerokun of the Lagos State University; Prof. Lanre Fagbohun of Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies; the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole; the guest lecturer, Dr. Tunde Ogowewo of Dickson Poon of Law School, Kings College, London; wife of the Governor of Ondo State, Kemi Mimiko; the Chairman of the Ikeja branch of the NBA, Monday Ubani; the immediate past Chairman of Lagos NBA, Taiwo Taiwo; Emeka Ngige (SAN); Pastor Dele Adesina (SAN); book reviewer, Adetunji Oyeyipo (SAN); Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN); former Assistant National Publicity Secretary, NBA, Gbolahan Gbadamosi; as well as human rights crusader, Wahab Shittu.
Speaking on corporate governance, the guest lecturer, Ogowewo, emphasised the need for strong regulatory framework on corporate governance in Nigeria.
He said that smart regulations would definitely nip to the bud the ills of corporate tunnelling in Nigeria’s corporate organisations.
He explained that shareholders in other countries such as South Africa and the United Kingdom are becoming more active in dictating corporate remuneration in order to avoid managers recklessly allocating huge salaries and allowances to themselves.
He said: “One way of tunnelling funds by banks is by way of chief executives paying themselves huge allowances.
“In South Africa, shareholders are rejecting high remuneration.
“In UK, the shareholders are becoming assertive.
“Internationally, there have been a revival of shareholders interest but in Nigeria, we are not doing much.”
Ogowewo suggested that Nigeria should explore principle-based regulations as a regulatory tool and called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to show example by ensuring that their board manages risks better.
The Editor-in-Chief of the BFLR, Dr. Olanipekun, said he was motivated to go into the publication because he found out that in recent years, election petition cases dominated the existing law reports, thereby creating problems for lawyers to make research trail.
According to him, that led to a bit of inconsistency in the Banking and Finance case law.
The publisher who pledged to ensure that the publication is sustained, said the law report would foster financial stability in the country since banking and financial matters are based on information.
The father of the Editor-in-Chief, Chief Olanipekun, extolled the virtues of his son and added that the young man was industrious and is doing better than him.
He thanked his colleagues for honouring the invitation and enjoined them to get a copy as it was professionally edited.
