Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command in the early hours of Saturday acting on the strength of information from a credible source that a truck load of cow skins, popularly called Ponmo, suspected to be poisonous, were heaped in a warehouse at 9, College Road, Igando, arrested six persons in connection with the development.
A team of Police Officers led by the Divisional Police Officer Igando mobilized to the scene to effect the arrest.
The large amount of ponmo and the chemicals used in its preservation were recovered.
One TATA truck, with registration number AKD-375-XB, which was used in conveying the goods, was impounded.
Officials of Lagos State Ministry of Health were contacted and after due examination, the cow skins were confirmed to be poisonous and not fit for human consumption.
The six suspects arrested were Adelowo Yinka, a male aged 50 of 1, Ifelodun Street, Agric Road, Egan, who was also the truck driver; Olawumi Onabanjo, female, 40, of 3, Olunshabiko Street, Itere, Ogun State; Omowumi Wasiu, female, 43, of new site Muwo, Badagry; Adeshokan Taiwo, male, 43, of no fixed address; Iyabo Oluwa, female, 38, of Ifelodun Street, Ijegun, Ikotun; and Taye Kazeem, male, 40, of 11, Disu Street, off Ijagemon Road, Ijegun, Ikotun.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Zubairu Muazu, assured Lagosians that the Command is determined to continually protect life and property of the people as well as preservation of Public Health and Safety as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the source and destinations of those poisonous food items, the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Bala Elkana, said in a statement on Sunday, adding that the suspects will be charged to Court.
