A man who “put a knife to” a woman’s throat after an Anthony Joshua fight in Cardiff has been jailed.
The incident occurred on April 1 following Joshua’s clash with Joseph Parker in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
On Friday Cardiff Crown Court heard Mitchell Beverley, 28, was at Myst Night Club on St Mary Street when the incident took place, WalesOnline reports.
The court heard Huddersfield man Beverley had attended the club with another male but an argument broke out between them.
Prosecuting Julia Cox said: “They got into an argument at the nightclub.
“She got in between the two males to try and separate them.
“She realised quite quickly that they were friends.
“He replied saying: ‘don’t touch me.’
“He pulled out what she felt was a knife.”
Cox said the victim was “quite obviously petrified” and Beverley was said to be acting in a distasteful manner.
Cox added: “He was particularly aggressive saying: ‘You don’t put your hands on me’.
“He kept swearing at her.”
The court was also told Beverley said: “this will end badly for you” before leaving the venue.
He then went to a taxi rank where police found him and searched him.
Cox explained, initially, the police couldn’t find the knife but later discovered it in a taxi.
Beverley pleaded guilty to two charges – affray and threatening with an article with a blade or point.
Defending Beverley Mr Heath Edwards said: “Mr Beverley understands that he will be imprisoned as a result of what he did.
“He knows there was not an excuse for acting the way he did.
“Through me he apologises for any threat he may have caused.”
Sentencing Beverley, of Thomas Street, Huddersfield, Recorder Lucy Crowther, who appeared at the hearing via video link, said he had a “very bad record.”
Crowther said: “When she came to separate you two you put a knife up to the side of her throat.
“You were swearing at her.
“She must have been absolutely terrified that you were going to stab her.
“You left and you calmed down.
“You made your way to the local taxi rank. You were traced there.
“After a very thorough search a knife was found behind a seat.
“There was no reason for you to have it on you in Cardiff that night.”
Beverley was sentenced to 24 months in prison and must serve half of his sentence before being released on licence.
