The National Youths Summit on Peace and Security on Friday called for an interface of all presidential candidates in Nigeria with youths.
The President of the group, Prosper Okafor, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that the interface was necessary to avail the youth first hand assessment of all the presidential candidates.
Okafor explained that the group’s demand was in tandem with global democratic practices which, he said, was a demonstration of the people’s power.
He urged all the political parties to see the proposed interface as a platform to sell their manifesto and candidates to the masses.
He said: “We, Nigerian youths with the technical assistance of the Nigerian Police and Nigerian Civil Defense is organising summits at the national, Federal Capital Territory and 36 states levels.
“All presidential candidates of INEC registered political parties and their deputies shall be invited to interact with youth leaders at the national summit.”
He said that the platform should also be leveraged by all Governorship and National Assembly candidates during the 36 states level summits.
According to him, thereafter, over 75 million Nigerian youths shall make up their mind on their choice of candidates at all levels, irrespective of political parties’ affiliation.
Okafor, who restated the important role of the youth in the democratisation process, said credible 2019 general elections was a collective responsibility of all.
He, however, said that his group was committed to capacity building, and sensitisation of youths.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that NYSPS is mobilising support for an end to electoral violence by youths and to protect their mandate.
