Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Wednesday inaugurated the board of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency to complement the efforts of security agencies and boost security in the State.
Ambode reiterated at the inauguration, held at the Lagos House, Alausa, that his administration was passionate about community policing, hence the establishment of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps which would replace the existing Neighbourhood Watchers.
The governor said the initiative further restates the commitment of his administration to the safety of life and property and is a demonstration of promise kept to all citizens of the state.
Ambode said: “They would also help to attract, grow investments and improve the ease of doing business in the state.
“In addition to equipping our security agencies, this agency is also a form of communal protection in place to boost and support the great job the Police is presently doing.’’
Ambode, congratulating the members, said law, order and safety of lives, especially at the grassroots, remained paramount to his administration.
He said: “The new safety corps will complement efforts of security agencies and not take over their jobs.
“As a government, we will commit resources to ensure the success of the corps, especially at creating an investment friendly Lagos.”
In his remarks, Chairman of the Agency, Isreal Ajao, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, thanked the governor and promised that the agency would live up to its responsibility at the grassroots.
According to him, with the peculiar nature of Lagos, the citizens deserve adequate security.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that on August 15, Governor Ambode had signed into law the state’s Neighbourhood Safety Corps and Property Protection Laws.
