The Human Rights Writer Association of Nigeria, a Non-Governmental Organisation, has called on Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State to reconsider his plan to demolish a church in Mando area of the state.
This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko.
HURIWA said the plan by governor to demolish Saint Francis of Asisi Catholic Church and Gbagyi settlement in the state was a distraction.
According to it, it is unfair that after series of sectarian conflicts in the last two decades and with relative peace returning to Kaduna State, the problem of demolishing is coming again.
It said El-Rufai should not deploy public resources to demolishing houses, assets and worship centres of the citizenry.
The group appealed to the National Assembly and international community to prevail on the state government not to demolish the church and the houses of Gbagyi people.
El-Rufai had said all structures in the Gbagyi Village suburb of Kaduna State without Certificate of Occupancy and Building Permits would be pulled down.
