No fewer than seven ministers may have formally signified their intention to resign their ministerial positions to pursue governorship ambitions in their respective States.
Consequently, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) Wednesday held a valedictory session in their honour.
The ministers are Information, Labaran Maku (Nasarawa); Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu (Ebonyi); Labour, Emeka Wogu (Abia); Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike (Rivers); Minister of State for Trade and Investmnet, Dr Sam Otom (Benue); Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro (Lagos); and the Minister of State for Niger Delta, Darius Isiaku.
Speaking at the session, President Goodluck Jonathan hinted that the seven ministers may not attend the next FEC meeting.
According to Jonathan, their decision to quit Council was in line with the directive by the Peoples Democratic Party that all those interested in elective positions must disengage before October 20.
He however, said the seven ministers are still Council members untilOctober 20, when they are expected to have submitted their resignation letters to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim.
Jonathan spoke further, “In politics you don’t conclude anything until it happens. The seven ministers may not be in council by next week Wednesday”.
While wishing them well in their future endeavours, the President also said any of them could change his mind not to quit before the October 20deadline.
It will be recalled that the Minister of information, Labaran Maku, had last week Sunday announced at a special Church thanksgiving service in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, that he would quit FEC on October 20, to join the governorship race under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
